    ABOUT THE CLASS

This class introduces dancers to the dynamic principles of Gyrokinesis®  through a floor work approach designed to enhance strength, coordination, articulation, and the concept of rebound swing and release. Using circular, breath-supported

pathways, dancers develop a deeper sense of consistency and controlling movement while building, fundamental and functional strength that supports their technical training, both in contemporary dance and classical dance.

The class begins on the floor, we're spirals, undulations, and rhythmic, sequences, awaken the spine, free the joints, and activate core support. This grounded work increases mobility, instability, simultaneously, preparing the body for more precise and articulate movement.

From the floor work, dancers will transition to the barre, where classical ballet principles are infused with contemporary movements approaches. Traditional lines, make modern circularity as dancers explore, turn out, placement and balance through Gyrokinesis® inspired flow, oppositional, energy, and three dimensional awareness. The barre becomes a space for classical structure and contemporary freedom work together to strengthen the body and expand move-in potential.

Throughout the class, dancers cultivate a heightened, mind-body connection, learning to sense, alignment, breath, rhythm, and rebound as inter-connected elements. The result is a comprehensive training experience, that builds power, articulation, and efficiency, while encouraging creativity and body intelligence.

This fusion of Gyrokinesis® , floor work, and Contemporary/Ballet creates a holistic movement practice that supports dancers and developing not only technical exploration, but also a deeper awareness of how the body moves, responds and expresses.

    ABOUT THE CLASS

This workshop is intended for classical and contemporary dancers, as well as movement teachers of all ages, who are at various stages in their journey with technique. It is best suited for those with a working knowledge of ballet who wish to expand their embodied awareness of linear forms. The lessons invite each dancer to explore how classical positions can feel more comfortable in the body, and illuminate new possibilities for movement.

    Part One (1.5 hours)

We begin with an interactive group process, examining familiar classical ballet forms such as arabesque, passé, fourth front, and second position. What can our skeletons teach us about these positions? How can we organize the weight of these forms to make them feel more comfortable and ready for dance? We move through a range of exercises to help locate sensations of placement, and we observe one another to notice the discoveries unfolding in the room.

    Part Two (1.5 hours)

Music exploration becomes part of the process, and we do a full ballet class. The class draws on techniques inspired by the Cecchetti tradition*, articulated through the lens of anatomical function. How can we make our movement more “percussive,” and discover dynamic ways of working that are both pleasurable and sustainable? In class, we explore approaches for easing muscular effort and refining our suspensions, ballon, and turns.

*The Cecchetti technique is offered through the lineage of Janet Panetta (1948–2023), who trained with Margaret Craske, was my teacher, and whom I assisted for ten years in Europe and New York City. In the 1990s, Janet coined the title Ballet for Contemporary Dancers, having previously called her class Ballet for Modern Dancers for several decades. She also developed classes such as Investigating Ballet and Deconstructing Ballet for dancers. I credit this workshop largely to her.
